Do managers need to be coaches too?

Managers are coaches, so it's not a case of need. They are, fact. So the answer to that question is if you're asking that question, I wonder what your managers are like. Every single experience though, that people have, there's an element of coaching going on. So I sit here and I'm called a coach and I don't really like the terminology for this exact reason. Everybody in, in some way, shape or form is a coach. Cause whether consciously or subconsciously, they're showing behaviors that people are learning from. And you can certainly give managers much more support to have better conversations, but ultimately if you're having conversations and especially in a managerial role, you are going to be coaching. It doesn't mean you're doing good coaching though. That's the crux of it. So no, they don't, because they already are. What they need to do is be given support to become effective managers. And that's not easy.
